Resource Description

Phonics Grade 1. Word families with e.
This workbook has been developed according to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement. It was designed to increase phonemic awareness and encourage learners to recognise and learn to write words with the e-sound in the middle. It will also promote and enrich vocabulary.
Learners become aware that speech consists of a series of sounds. They learn to recognise sounds and become aware that sounds are arranged in a way to form words and words arranged in a certain way to form sentences. The letter cards in the back are to cut out and “build” e-words on page 4 and 5.
The workbook has different fun pages like building words with letter cards, word search, crossword puzzles and others. These are to allow the opportunity to recognise and learn to write e-words in an interesting way. Each learner should be given the challenge to experience and learn at his/her own pace. They could work in groups, in pairs or individually. The worksheets give the teacher a choice to allow some learners the chance to do more basic work and reinforce essential skills while others could be ready for more challenging work, keeping them interested. Alternatively, learners could each have a book and work at their own pace. More difficult pages could be left until they are ready to master it. Learners could still work in pairs, in groups or individually. I left the inside pictures to be coloured and learners should be encouraged to do so as they need to practise their fine motor skills and demonstrate their individuality.
Learners will also be thrilled to show off their emerging skills in using a Dictionary correctly. The Dictionary I often use is the
Oxford First Dictionary, New Edition. ISBN 978-0-19-911520-4.
The different activities in the book will help reinforce e-words and the basic skills to successfully write spelling words and sentences independently. This will give the learners confidence and a sense of achievement. They will still need support to ensure success and to encourage a lifelong love of writing and reading. Enjoy this life changing experience with them!
